Commodore 64/128 Paul Whitehead Teaches Chess (1985)

PAUL WHITEHEAD TEACHES CHESS published by Enlightenment Inc in 1985, is an interesting game loaded with chess examples in the built-in chess tutorial. The chess engine was written by Julio Kaplan called the KAFFEEHAUS SCHACHCHAMPION. Julio Kaplan chess engines were also used by the dedicated chess computer manufacturers SciSys and Saitek.

Although the game seems to take take the full level time before making a move, the opening moves do however indicate that there is a built in chess openings library in the program.

PAUL WHITEHEAD TEACHES CHESS plays an interesting game and you should have a lot fun playing against KAFFEEHAUS SCHACHCHAMPION. Here as some option examples:

  • L - To Change Levels
  • N - New Game
  • R - Take Back Move
  • M - Force Computer to move.
  • X - Reverse Chess Board
  • Y - Problem Solving

In any case, the program plays a good game of chess and you should have fun playing against it. Estimated rating is approximately 1350-1450 ELO (1550-1650 USCF).
