The CXG Advanced Star Chess has an unusual design, but with its 4.1/2” width and 1” depth you can easily slip it into your inside jacket pocket and sneak a game or two while you are at work. Especially if you remove the bulky plastic cover that is meant to protect the chess board and control buttons. The cover is a little loose fitting and therefore can be a nuisance if you are carrying the computer around.
The chess pieces are stored in a compartment that is situated along the right edge of the unit. The pieces are quite large and therefore easy to manipulate on the small 3” sensory peg board.
The move display lights are on the right side and across the top of the sensory peg board which at first takes a little getting used to.
The CXG Advanced Star Chess has 44 levels of play. Sixteen of these levels are Tournament levels from 40 moves in 1 minute to 40 moves in 10 Hours. A further sixteen levels are Countdown levels starting at 1 minute per game to 10 hours per game. Therefore you have a lot of variety to choose from for Blitz, Speed and Tournament chess. There are another eight entertainment levels suitable for the beginner, where the computer tries to match your strength. The final four levels cover mate search and infinite search, as well as demonstrations for normal play and blitz.
The CXG Advanced Star Chess has a neat option where you can change its play style for additional variety. There are four play styles available to you. Normal play, Attacking play, Aggressive play and Positional play. These play style options effectively quadruple the amount of play levels that you can set. You will also most likely keep busy for hours trying to figure out which play style is the most interesting and strongest.
The CXG Advanced Star Chess has an Opening Book of 6000 half moves and 1000 opening variations. But if you want more, you can also add your favorite killer opening lines into the computer. This however is limited to 240 half-moves.
In 1985 when the CXG Advanced Star Chess first came to the market, it was quite unique when considering all its build-in features.
Its playing strength should keep most players up to 1900 USCF entertained for a very long time.
