FIDELITY ELECTRONICS produced a Special Edition Chess computer that was available only through the U. S. Chess Federation for its members and the readers of U. S. Chess Federation's monthly magazine Chess Life. The program inside this computer is the Prestige program running at a reduced speed of 2.5 MHz making it slower than the Prestige wooden chess computer which was sold with a speed of 4 MHz.

OPENING BOOK LIBRARY:

The computer contains and opening book library of 8,160 moves. These moves are divided among 381 lines which run to an average depth or 30 half-moves. Because each position is stored only once, no matter how many lines stem from that move, a great economy results. If the same 381 lines were stored from the first move to the last, the book would require 11,430 to store the same information. Thus, 11,430 positions is the effective size of the computer's opening book (where effective size is defined as the number of lines times the average depth).
