FIDELITY ELECTRONICS produced a “Special Edition” Chess computer that was available only through the U.S. Chess Federation for its members and the readers of U.S. Chess Federation’s monthly magazine “Chess Life”. The program inside this computer is the Prestige program running at a reduced speed of 2.5 MHz making it slower than the Prestige wooden chess computer which was sold with a speed of 4 MHz.

This U.S CHESS FEDERATION LIMITED EDITION chess computer was sold at a special price $285.00 to the Federation’s members which included the Fidelity Impact Chess Printer.

MAIN FIDELITY U.S. CHESS FEDERATION SPECIAL EDITION GAME CHARACTERISTICS:

    • Built-in CB9 Chess Openings Module
    • Knows en passant, castling and pawn promotion.
    • While thinking the display can show the move it is considering, search depth and the score of the position.
    • Selectable book openings and book practice mode.
    • 15 selectable play levels including preset time controls, fixed depth search, user selectable, countdown for Blitz, problem solving, fixed time search and infinite for analysis.
    • User-selectable level setting provide infinite level setting combinations for tournament play.
    • Take back up to 22 half moves.
    • Solves mate-in-7 problems.
    • Thinks during opponents time (can be turned off for additional easier level choices).
    • Alternate moves - when the computer has finished its search and has come back with a move you can push the RV Key to have it make a different move.
    • Two player mode for humans to play against each other, acts as referee.
    • Improved end game algorithms.
    • Position set up and position verification.

OPENING BOOK LIBRARY:

The computer contains and opening book library of 8,160 moves. These moves are divided among 381 lines which run to an average depth or 30 half-moves. Because each position is stored only once, no matter how many lines stem from that move, a great economy results. If the same 381 lines were stored from the first move to the last, the book would require 11,430 to store the same information. Thus, 11,430 positions is the effective size of the computer’s opening book (where effective size is defined as the number of lines times the average depth).
