Discovery Channel was founded in 1982 by John Hendricks together with its parent company Cable Educational Network Inc.  Discovery began broadcasting in 1985 specializing in educational programming with cultural and wildlife documentaries.

In recent years Discovery Channel spends most of its time broadcasting reality TV shows.
