2009 Commodore Junior Guest Championship

ROUNDS:  10 - 18

The 2009 COMMODORE JUNIOR GUEST CHAMPIONSHIP is a mini tournament played within the larger 2009 COMMODORE JUNIOR OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP and includes the results and tables of the dedicated chess computers that were entered as guests into the main tournament in order to help establish ELO ratings for the Commodore 64/128 chess software. People who have an interest in dedicated chess computers may find this mini tournament interesting to compare performances between these dedicated machines. All the games were played at either 30 seconds per move or 60 moves in 30 minutes, dependent on the individual machines level settings.

2009 Commodore Junior Open Guests Championship Table showing performance from Rounds 10-18

Chafitz Morphy finds some form in the second half of the tournament playing the final 9 games without loss. Mephisto III slips a little, losing to New York Times and Cosmic and survives with a lucky draw against Morphy who incredibly plays for a draw in an easily won position. Incredibly Cosmic loses to both Champion Mk 3 and CC Voice.

The table may not show how close this tournament was in the end. In the final round Cosmic who had beaten Mephisto III in both the games that they played needed to beat Fidelity CC Voice and lost. Morphy needed to beat Champion MK 3 and instead only managed a draw. This was a double disappointment for Morphy who in Round 17 should have beaten Mephisto III and instead settled for draw in an easily won position with a Queen advantage. But, in the end as is so often the case, LUCK favors the good and the lesser opponents can think back and rue their missed opportunities.
