HYPRA-CHESS is a German program written by Thomas Gaksch in 1987. The program is very basic, without graphic chess board and without any special features. You enter your move, the engine computes and responds with it’s move. You will have to follow the game on a chess board or with another chess program on your PC in order to play it.
In order to make a move you enter the move as follows on your PC: e2=e4 (remember the Commodore “-” is “=” on a PC.
There is a SETUP POSITION option when you start the game but it seem quite difficult to use.
The HYPRA-CHESS game has book openings and it will repeat the same opening response to your move every time. This is a pity because once you start playing you will quickly see that the program could have been quite good if it had been completed.
Make sure that you enter your moves carefully and correctly because there is no opportunity to correct a mistake.
Thomas Gaksch is still involved with chess engines today on PC. His TOGA engines are available on the Internet. TOGA is a configured FRUIT engine originally written by Fabian Letouzey and Joachim Rang.
Estimated rating for HYPRA-CHESS is 1250 - 1350 ELO (1450 - 1550 USCF).
