Commodore 64/128 Paul Whitehead Coffee House Chess Monster (1985)

This is the COFFEE HOUSE CHESS MONSTER program only which was used in PAUL WHITEHEAD TEACHES CHESS published by Enlightenment Inc in 1985. The COFFEE HOUSE CHESS MONSTER chess engine was written by Julio Kaplan. Julio Kaplan chess engines were also used by the dedicated chess computer manufacturers SciSys and Saitek.

Although the game seems to take take the full level time before making a move, the opening moves do however indicate that there is a built in chess openings library in the program.

COFFEE HOUSE CHESS MONSTER plays an interesting game. Here as some option examples:

  • L - To Change Levels
  • N - New Game
  • R - Take Back Move
  • M - Force Computer to move.
  • X - Reverse Chess Board
  • Y - Problem Solving

You can check out the complete German version here:

In any case, the program plays a good game of chess and you should have fun playing against it. Estimated rating is approximately 1350-1450 ELO (1550-1650 USCF).

The Spacious-Mind Active game results (shown above) are from games played with a Commodore 64 or 128. Game Software was loaded from a PC into a Commodore 64/128 using C64TPC. C64TPC connects to the Commodore 64/128 via the Disk Drive Port and links to the PC with a Serial Cable. Playing PAUL WHITEHEAD COFFEE HOUSE CHESS MONSTER with an Emulator should play exactly the same as using a Commodore 64 or 128.
